This is one of my favorite films, in large part because it's so crazy and so sexy. The two Italian ladies - Ornella Muti (Aura) and Mariangelo Melato (General Kala) - were both very famous actresses in their home country, and known for their sexy roles. They were cast because the producer, Dino di Laurentiis, was Italian. Dino was very hands-on, a micro-manager, which made him a bit of a PITA. He kept getting into everything, and at one point, he complained to the director about the soundtrack. "I'm having trouble with the Queens!" Hodges replied, "You're going a have a lot more trouble if you call them that to thei faces." 🤣 The FX in this movie were all practical, as CGI did not exist at the time. The swirling skies were all dyed oils in water (much like the FX in 2001: A Space Odyssey), and the spacecraft, planets, castles, were all miniatures. The costumes were all hand-sewn and beaded; Ming's robes alone weight over 50 lbs and caused Max von Sydow back pain. (He played King Osric in "Conan the Barbarian.") He said later that he had taken the role of Ming as a gift to his grandchildren; Flash Gordon was originally a comic book, and then a series of theatrical shorts that came out weekly in theaters, and they were still played on TV after school in the 70's, so his grandkids were familiar with it. (Flash was a spaceman in the series. He was changed to a football player so the movie could follow him from Earth into space.) This movie is insanely horny because it was produced by an Italian. di Laurentiis's movies always tended to be very over-the-top and sexy. It was their thing at the time. He produced numerous big movies, and they all tended to be lush. Brian Blessed, who played Voltan the leader of the Winged Men, fulfilled a lifelong dream in this film. He'd always wanted to play Voltan. Timothy Dalton (Prince Barin) went on to play James Bond, and his first movie role was in "The Lion in Winter", where he played Louis, the French king who was, shall we say, _familiar_ with Richard I. Sam Jones (Flash) had to have his lines dubbed in by another actor, as he had a rather thin and unimpressive voice. He and Melody Anderson (Dale) had their hair colors reversed - she was a blonde and he was dark-haired, but di Laurentiis decided they should be the opposite.

Brian Blessed- sorry, BRIAN BLESSED - really only evolved into his foghorn final form once he grew that beard; guessing he had to boost his volume to get through it. Check out his earlier performances, in e.g. Z Cars, Blake's Seven or I, Claudius, and you'll see far more subtlety in his range.

The British actor Brian Blessed, who played the Ruler of the Winged Bird Men in this film, also played the Ruler of the Gungans in the Star Wars prequels ... see the similarity?! Blessed has said in interviews that to this day, people ask him to speak his most memorable line from this film: "GORDON'S ALIVE!"

When this movie was on television the initiation scene was usually cut out. Prince Baron, guy in green, was played by Timothy Dalton who went on to play the role James Bond in two movies later in the 1980s. The took the role from Pierce Brosnan when NBC wouldn't release Brosnan because he was playing Remington Steele. He finally got the chance at Bond in the 1990s.

There are plenty of actors in this who are quite respected. Topol (Zarkov) is the lead in Fiddler on the Roof (highly recommended), Max Von Sydow (Ming) has been in various things (including Star Wars: The Force Awakens), Timothy Dalton (Baron) was a James Bond (between Roger Moore and Pierce Brosnan), and Brian Blessed (Voltan) has been in various things as well (including being who they originally wanted to play Odin in the MCU). It's a lot of over-acting here, to fit the theme of the movie--over-the-top acting to fit an over-the-top film. As with every video of yours, I recommend the movie Imagine Me & You, as well as Zsazsa Zaturnnah.

You should definitely watch the 2012 comedy 'Ted.' In addition to being hilarious, it is also a wonderful homage to Flash Gordon.

Topol, who plays Dr. Zarkov, is also in _For Your Eyes Only,_ which you'll eventually get to in your James Bond watch-alongs. He was also in the musical _Fiddler on the Roof,_ which you should also watch at some point.

Get some crackers out.... they will go well with the Cheesiness you will be seeing. 😄 The bright colors of the movie is an homage to the comic book this originally spawned from. The fact that they got Queen to do the soundtrack for the movie just adds to the awesomeness.... I use to watch the original black and white serial shows on reruns... they use to play at midnight on weekends on a UHF TV channel that broadcast out of Canada. As a kid I found the special effects funny. When the space ship would take off you could tell it was a model on a string being lifted round and round with a sparkler shooting sparks out the back of the model. The acting was day time soap quality acting... over the top and dramatic. This is more of a cult classic thing than quality story telling. I just love it... I bought the original black and white shows on DVD and had to buy a Brazilian copy of this 1980 version because it was out of print in the US. (this was before streaming)

Pussy flipped after Bond seduced her. She called the feds and gave them the info and also presumably swapped out the gas canisters so nobody acrually got gassed.

I know this version has its fans, but I prefer the 1930s serials- the very thing that inspired George Lucas to create Star Wars. While still outrageous, the serials remained faithful to the comic strip without being too campy. Plus Buster Crabbe was a more refined hero (his Flash comes from a wealthy background). The 1980's movie is more a trippy rock opera without the songs. Oh, and Ash, you may want to remember one of cast members if you continue your James Bond reactions.

There's a drinking game for this. You drink every time someone says "Flash" including the opening credits. There are 100 "Flash's".

Prince Barin, the one in green wearing a moustache is Timothy Dalton. He played 007 in Living Daylights and License to Kill. Letting know so when you see those movies you'll know why he looks familiar.

Ok, where does one begin... Max Von Sydow would be recognized by you if you've seen SW the force awakens. Timothy Dalton has the singular distinction of being the worst Bond actor. Topol played the lead in the film version of Fiddler on the roof. Sam Jones... Didn't do much else after this film. Ornella Muti was in Sylvester Stallone's ONLY comedy "Oscar", her pet Deep Roy was ALL the oompa loompa

Corny? Yes. Campy? Oh yeah. Silly? Absolutely. But fun to watch? 100%! And one other thing I'll say about this movie: I have a pretty decent collection of blu-rays and this is one of the very best looking transfers I have ever seen. It looks completely STUNNING in HD. As you saw by the ending, they had plans to set up a sequel but for some reason it just never happened.

Used to have the soundtrack to this on tape in the car (yes I am old). Great to listen to as it also contained a lot of the words as well. Fiddler on the Roof 1971 is a musical where Topol (Zarkov) plays the main character. Worth a watch.
